10 Spa Treatments You Can Do at Home

One of the worst things about tightening your budget is giving up the little things. Spa treatments are definitely little things with a cost that adds up quickly. Fortunately, you can give yourself a number of spa treatments from the comfort of your home at a fraction of the price. While it’s not the same as having someone wait on you hand and foot, these at-home treatments can keep you looking and feeling your best in tough times.

Spa Treatments

1. Manicures

Manicures are easy to do yourself. What’s more, they provide you with a meditative experience. Get that old nail polish off, and trim your nails to just a bit longer than your preferred length. Then file them into the shape you would like. Soak your hands in warm water for ten minutes before applying a cuticle oil and pushing your cuticles back. Exfoliate your hands, apply a little moisturizer, and get ready to put on polish. Your hands will be looking great at a fraction of the cost.

2. Deep Conditioning

You can give yourself a deep conditioning at home with natural ingredients. To make your own deep conditioner, you’ll need a jar of natural mayonnaise and half an avocado. Mash the avocado into the mayonnaise, and work it into your hair. Then cover the hair with a shower cap and a warm, wet towel. Read a book or magazine for 20 minutes, then rinse your hair out.

3. Massage

No, you don’t have to press your significant other into service for this one. You can give yourself a massage that will have you feeling soothed and relaxed. Start at the base of your head with your left hand massaging your right side. Work your way down, then switch. Use your fingers to get the small areas of your spine. You can also easily massage your hands and feet. While nothing beats a good shiatsu, this will do the trick in a pinch.

4. Aromatherapy

Have a good soak in the tub with homemade aromatherapy treatments. The base of all aromatherapy bath salts is one part sea salt, two parts baking soda, and one part Epsom salts. Mix it all up, and add a few drops at a time of your favorite essential oil scents. Scents like vanilla and chamomile are popular for relaxing in the tub. Sit and soak in the tub for as long as you need to and get the aromatherapy spa experience at home.

5. Waxing

While it’s not generally a good idea to wax your more delicate bits at home, you can wax your eyebrows, legs, and arms without great difficulty. Roller waxes are perfect for the novice who doesn’t want to get wax all over their bathroom. Shower before you wax, and pick a wax with moisturizer in it if you have sensitive skin.

6. Steam Facials

Steam facials are very easy to give yourself at home. Boil water and let it sit for a bit before steeping herbs in the water. Good herbs for a steam facial include peppermint, green tea, and lavender. You need the water to be hot enough to provide five minutes of steam. Once the herbs have steeped for a few minutes, put your face and the water underneath a towel. This keeps the steam in, opening your pores up for deep cleaning. Always wash your face and remove all makeup before giving yourself any kind of facial treatment.

7. Natural Facial Masks

After you’ve spent five minutes in your steam tent, you can apply a natural facial mask you make at home. Mix some milk and honey together in a bowl. The resulting mixture should be both creamy and sticky. Make sure to keep your hair back away from the face, then apply the mixture. Lay down on your bed, throw some cucumber slices over your eyes, and relax for 15 minutes. When you’re done, rinse first with warm water, then with cold. Dab your face dry (don’t wipe!) and apply your favorite moisturizer.

8. Exfoliating

You can make your own exfoliating scrubs at home that work for the whole body. Put table salt into a container, then fill the container with olive oil just past the line formed by the salt. Mix it up and apply it to every part of your body you want to exfoliate. Rub it in good, then rinse to remove.

9. Dying Your Hair

Whether you’re looking to cover up grey or just give yourself a bold new look, dying your hair at home is simple and easy. You can get quality hair dyes from any drug store for a reasonable price. Cover your hair with a shower cap after you have saturated it with the dye. Also, be very careful — hair dye stains easily, so don’t wear anything that’s too important to you while you’re coloring your hair.

10. Pedicures

The steps to a home pedicure are much the same as a manicure. Soak your feet before shaping your nails. Throw some exfoliant on your feet to remove layers of dead skin. Now you’re ready to apply your favorite color to your toes.
