Under Armour Unveils New Running Shoe

Just in time for Sunday’s New York City Marathon, Under Armour has unveiled its newest running shoe, the Speedform Gemini. A more-cushioned variation of the Speedform Apollo, which was introduced at the beginning of this year, the Gemini is being previewed exclusively at the company’s New York City flagship this weekend before being released to the general public at the beginning of next year.

Available in separate men’s and women’s models, the Gemini is cushioned and responsive, according to Under Armour. Like the Apollo, [contentblock id=2 img=adsense.png]it is also being produced in a bra factory, allowing it to have a seamless interior and a completed molded foot. It also features the newly created Charged Foam cushioning system, which adapts to the needs of the individual runner. “We’re taking what we learned with the Apollo, but this is a completely different shoe,”

Dave Dombrow, vice president and creative director of footwear for Under Armour, told WWD at an event at the New York store Thursday night. “It’s for going farther and longer.” The shoe will retail for $130, $30 more than the Apollo, and will be targeted to more “technical runners,” he said.

But it’s still light, weighing only 8.5 ounces. When reporting third-quarter results last week, Under Armour pointed to footwear as a major growth initiatives.

The category will account for less than 15 percent of the brand’s overall sales this year, but “we can envision that it can be larger than our apparel business someday,” company founder Kevin Plank said at the time. In the period, footwear sales rose 50 percent to $121.6 million and Plank projected that number will increase to $400 million this year.
