it’s Sushmita’s confidence and hard work that got her the coveted title in India. She then went on to win the international crown as well.

And there’s a lot one can imbibe from her life. Check out these 5 reasons why Sushmita Sen is a true woman in every sense of the word.
1. She made history by bagging the first ever Miss Universe title for India.
Back in 1994, legend has it that Aishwarya Rai was the top contender for the crown and all other contestants were threatened by her ethereal beauty. But it’s Sushmita’s confidence and hard work that got her the coveted title in India. She then went on to win the international crown as well.

2. She personifies the word ‘compassion’.
If you don’t believe this, her answer in the final round of the Miss Universe pageant will definitely change your mind. On being questioned about the essence of a woman, this is what she had to say, “The origin of a child is a mother, a woman. She shows a man what sharing, caring, and loving is all about. That is the essence of a woman.”
3. She came a long way despite her humble beginnings.
Apparently up until 16 years of age, Sushmita studied in a Hindi medium school, and it’s only after that, that she mastered the English language. She also went on to get a degree in journalism. Considering she won the international title being all of 18, that’s quite an achievement.
4. She’s bold and independent enough not to need a man to complete her.
Despite the media being obsessed about her not being married yet, Sushmita has time and again handled the questions about her singledom with grace. On being quizzed about her solitaire ring, she had said, “I don’t need a man in my life to have diamonds. I can own them myself.” That’s how she set an example for all women in the country – that getting married should not be the only aim in life.

5. She is woman enough to be a single mom, having adopted two baby girls.
She adopted her first daughter, Renee, when she was all of 25. In fact, she had to fight a legal battle back then to gain custody. To be 25, popular, single, and adopting a baby despite legal issues…boy! That’s something. Her second daughter, Alisah, came along in 2010.
