JESSICA BIEL – MEH. I’m always surprised at Jessica Biel’s red carpet choices. For one of the most beautiful women in the world, she doesn’t really stand out. The Chanel dress is amazing, but is it an Oscars dress? No. I get that she’s a presenter so probably shouldn’t be aiming to steal the limelight, but this feels a little last minute.MARGOT ROBBIE – MISS. Blink. Did you miss her? I think the cameras did too. In an unfortunate case of bad timing she’s gone brunette, I’m assuming for a role, but still. There are women who stun as brunettes and women who are meant to be blonde. Margot, I’m afraid, is the latter. The dress? Oh yes, it’s fabulous, with a cut out waist and sparkling bodice, but I can’t get past the hair.JENNIFER GARNER – MISS. This is difficult because it’s not the dress that’s a miss. In fact, the dress is fantastic. All layered and fringed and shiny and fabulous. It’s the hair that completely brings the dress down. She’s taken her Girl Next Door charm a little too literally. Side flicks and a clip? How old are we? Then there are those platform shoes which cheapen the whole thing. Oh Jen, you were so close. LADY Gaga – HIT. Whoever thought I’d be saying this about Lady Gaga In an unbelieveable move towards conformity, she is actually – gasp – appropriately dressed for the Academy Awards! The dress has the right amount of dazzle complete with a matching stole for drama. Quite the surprise. SANDRA BULLOCK – HIT. Here comes Sandra, hear her roar! A beautiful blue, strapless gown that is completely traditional but somehow, that’s okay on Ms Bullock. She doesn’t need edge or bells and whistles. She’s just a gorgeous gal in a gorgeous dress come to celebrate her movie. Lovely.MERYL STREEP – MEH. Dare I say this about the queen of all actresses? It appears I am. It’s not like she looks bad, this isn’t a fashion foible. It’s more of a fashion blah. I wish, just once, she’d splash out and get dressed up for the Oscars. Come on Meryl, we all know you’re amazing and you don’t particularly have to make an effort if you can’t be bothered, but we’d love it if you did.PENELOPE CRUZ –HIT. She’s glamour, personified, in this beautifully soft pink gown with black trim. The train at the back might be a bit much but if you ain’t gonna pull it out for the Oscars, then when can you? The whole draping Grecian trend really suits her.AMY ADAMS – MEH. It’s navy at least. And it fits wonderfully. I love the collar-like bustline and her jewels are beautiful. It’s all very understated and timeless and she’s probably very comfortable flying under the radar like this. But we want our celebrities to dazzle, don’t we? They dazzle so that we can wear dresses like this to our end of year work celebrations. Of course, ours wouldn’t be Gucci couture. KATE HUDSON – HIT. I love it when this woman gets on a red carpet. She carries a certain amount of old Hollywood Glamour with her in this glamorous, gathered gown with sparkly cape. And the soft wave in her hair is perfection. It’s sexy and vintage at the same time. CATE BLANCHETT – HIT. It’s as though the sparkles have simply been placed all over her body because of the nude mesh underneath. Cate Blanchett wears her Armani with all the regal intensity of a queen. The spangles are sewn on the finest of net fabrics which swishes brilliantly around her legs with a delicate lightness. Fit for a win? Most definitely. ANNE HATHAWAY – MISS. Hmm. Anne has gone for a slab of a mirrored armour on her chest which really doesn’t pay off. Together with her spiky hair it’s all quite harsh. She needs to add some softness to her look. ANGELINA JOLIE – HIT. It’s hard to look at Angelina. The woman is so ridiculously beautiful, and then she goes and wears this ridiculously beautiful dress. Really Angelina? I don’t know if we can take it! The sparkles drip off her gown like glistening dew and it’s all lush and fresh and morning like. She and Brad can do no more to cement their place as Hollywood’s Golden Couple, surely.OLIVIA WILDE – MEH. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just that she looked more glamorous at the Golden Globes in slinky green sequins. That was an Oscars dress. This Valentino is beautiful and classic but a little boring. No wonder she’s gone for giant jewellery. Saying that, I know that being pregnant you don’t always want to sparkle. Sometimes you just want to keep your bump low key. And there’s nothing wrong with that. LIZA MINELLI – HIT. Oh Ms Minelli! You teach the young folk how to walk the walk. The superstar is in a cobalt blue and manages to avoid all Smurf references purely because it’s a pantsuit, not a dress. She stays true to her signature neckline and sleeves but shows she still has spark by adding a piece of electric blue in her hair. Ever the drama queen. LUPITA NYONG’O – HIT. Fashion has a new queen and her name is Lupita Nyong’o. This actually gave me goosebumps. She chooses the most incredible colours and really did save the best til last. A glorious sky blue, Prada gown with super plunging neckline and light, dreamy dress that floats around her body with soft pleats. All set off with that delicate Fred Leighton diamond headband. She said the dress reminds her of her home, Nairobi. It doesn’t get any better than this folks.
