Indian Designer Shyamal & Bhumika’s First Mumbai Store

Ahmedabad-based couturiers Shyamal & Bhumika have finally opened doors of their new bridal studio at Kemps Corner, Mumbai, which is their first foray into the city. The store is an interpretation of a grand 18th century haveli in Gujarat, based in a heritage property. “[contentblock id=1 img=adsense.png]

You enter our world the moment you set your eyes on our antique door. We created this beautiful entrance from a collection of wooden panels from age-old ancestral houses. We feel it’s our creative contribution to the aura of the city when we see people stop and take photographs of the door,” says Shyamal Shodhan. An intricately designed spiral staircase leads up to the duo’s couture world,

where hinchka chains (used in royal jhoolas or swings) adorned with miniature metal elephants, parrots and peacocks (which are used to hang the designers’ ensembles), and Indo-European styled rosewood mirrors are suspended from a 16-foot high ceiling.

The royal haveli-inspired store houses a versatile collection of ornate wedding wear and lighter ensembles, as well as prêt and semi-formals. Indian embroideries, hand-woven fabrics and age-old craft techniques are combined with different dying arts and crafts of Gujarat like the Amdavadi weaving technique, zardozi, aari, peeta and marodi embroideries. You will see signature coordinated heirloom looks for brides and grooms, eveningwear and a range of hand-embellised trousseau-appropriate accessories. From kalidaars with overlap jackets and ijhaar pants, floor-sweeping gowns and jaama-inspired cholis to lehenga saris and collared blouses, the modernistic approach to tranditional bridal wear is evident.
