‘Vishwaroopam’ shows stopped across Tamil Nadu

Vishwaroopam MovieHundreds of Kamal Haasan fans, who had gathered in front of movie halls here waiting for the screening of his movie ‘Vishwaroopam’, had to return disappointed after shows were stopped. Many of them said that ‘Vishwaroopam’ couldn’t be screened after the police asked theatre owners to produce copies of a Madras high court interim order which stayed a government ban on the movie.

The movie was slated for release in at least six single screen halls and a multiplex here and fans had bought tickets in bulk. A theatre in Erode started screening the movie in morning but had to cancel the show after police instructed the management to stop the show until further orders. The management of VSP movie hall said that they terminated the show after a ‘technical’ glitch. But fans claimed that the show was terminated due to police intervention. “We are waiting as the management is saying that they do not have permission to screen the film. But we are hoping that the movie will be screened later in the day. It is unfortunate that fans are being denied an opportunity to watch the film here in Tamil Nadu even after it being released in other states,” said R Thangavelu, president (in-charge), All India Kamal Haasan Fans Welfare Association.

Meanwhile, police said that so far they have not received any instruction about screening the film and they were maintaining a close vigil over the situation as fans were growing agitated outside movie halls. They also said that theatre owners had stopped the screening by themselves. ” We are waiting for further orders,” said a police officer from Race Course police station.

In Chennai, none of the theatres screened the movie. Apart from a few protests outside theatres, a ‘Vishwaroopam’ banner put up in front of Devi theatre on Anna Salai was set on fire on Wednesday morning. – Timesofindia
